Vantage Point Farmer’s Market and the Cash Mob

Last weeks market

Last weeks market – First of the year

It has begun….another great year of the Vantage Point Farmer’s Market.

At the first market there were new faces and old friends…many vendors are returning this year to offer their wares and what a wide selection available this year.

In the past there were 2 markets offered…the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and the Arts and Crafts Fair on Sundays. This year the two are combined to offer a one day a week event that provides shoppers the convenience of a one day shopping trip with the variety of both markets.

Saturday, May 18, the Port Huron Cash Mob group has chosen the market as the site for this week’s Mob event. Not sure what a cash mob is? It is a way for local residents and visitors alike to offer support to local area businesses. What better way to support our area than stopping down to Vantage Point Farmer’s Market and purchasing you spring planting necessities, some new garden or lawn art, a delicious bacon topped cupcake (really! they are wonderful!), or maybe a new picture to hang on your wall at home.

Vantage Point Farmer’s Market, located next to the mouth of the Black River, is a wonderful place to spend any Saturday, but Cash Mob Saturday, May 18, may prove to be the most fun you will have shopping this month!first day at R n R market 006 first day at R n R market 009

Vantage Point Farmer’s Market is going strong this year! It has been a great summer with plentiful sunshine, refreshing breezes and lots of great shoppers, products and vendors! This years market has welcomed back many familiar faces and added a few new ones, too.

Many thanks goes out  to Liz Mathews, our Market Master, for all her hard work and dedication to the success of the Vantage Point Farmer’s Market.

The market takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays from now through October 27. It starts at 8:am and runs through 2:pm. There were a few vendors who sold out early, so come early and come often to the 2012 Farmers Market at Vantage Point!

Don’t forget, the market accepts the Senior Market Program, the Bridge card and offers the Double-up Food Bucks program!

Port Huron and the Great Lakes Maritime Center, a great place for boat watching!

A great place for ship watching!

Many people enjoy the pastime of watching freighters sailing in various parts of the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway. All have a favorite spot to watch and photograph from, but most have a spot that they dream of visiting someday. For many, that spot is Port Huron with its Great Lakes Maritime Center, home to the international headquarters of boatnerd.com.

The Blue Water Bridge with the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse’s green flash in the distance.

Salties and Lakers, Tankers and ‘Footers’ pass by the watchers at the Maritime Center on a regular basis. Following is a random gathering of ships that have sailed past Port Huron in the last year. Most were photographed from the Maritime Center, but some were captured at the Blue Water Bridge or the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse.

The Underwater Camera is back at the Great Lakes Maritime Center!

The under water display is back!

Great news! The underwater camera that displays on the screen in the Maritime Center at Vantage Point is back in business and clearer than ever! Our good friend, Greg Lashbrook, has spent a great deal of time working on setting up this camera to give the best view of life below the surface of the St Clair River. There has been much activity since the display went back online.

The display is clearer than ever before!

This display is wonderful entertainment for young and old alike. So, take a moment to stop by the Great Lakes Maritime Center to discover what goes on under the blue!

Vantage Point Flower Market

What a great selection!

The Vantage Point Flower Market has been a huge success again this year. There have been a great variety of items available for your home, garden and yard. Beautiful hanging baskets full of gorgeous flowers and greenery, soil and decorative stone for your landscaping needs, a large selection of vegetable and herb plants for your gardening pleasure, and decorative wood sculptures and signage to highlight and   personalize your yard.

Yum!!

We can’t forget those great people who provide food and drink during the Flower Market. Lily’s Woodfire Pizza providing the most delectable pizza around, The Mackinac Island Ice Cream Trailer offering scrumptious frozen treats, and the fry trailer is open again this year under new management. Are you looking forward to next year’s already?

Shipping Season is Officially Underway!

The Munson, second ship to traverse the Soo Locks after the 2012 opening.

The Soo Locks opened at noon on Saturday, March 24, instead or 12:01 am Sunday morning, due to request made by the shipping industry. An unusually warm winter made for minimal to non-existent ice conditions which allows the ships to maneuver throughout the Great Lakes earlier than normal.

That means, all you boat lovers out there, that SHIPPING SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN on the Great Lakes. We will begin to see those behemoth freighters gracing our horizons and, for some of us, our veritable front doorsteps. I know I am excited, so I am sure you are, too.

Winter lay-up across the water in Sarnia.

I have had a collection of freighters to view throughout the winter months, unfortunately, they have been the same ones, parked in the same spots, for the past several months. I am ready for new sights, freighters on the move, bow waves, and the sounds of those beloved salutes! Blessings on the men and women who sail these Great Lakes and may you have a safe and prosperous 2012 shipping season!
